CV Guidance
These observations are based more on content than design. However you should bear in mind that your CV needs to be clear and concise and that its presentation is an extension of yourself.
Many people focus on what headings they should have and "how many pages is too long?" Both of these are worthy of merit, and although no one wants to receive a CV with an index coversheet, neither should override the relevant content. A CV tells the reader much about the author and clearly should be orderly, informative and well laid out - much like any other working document.
An unfocused, confused or ambiguous document, read without intimate knowledge of the author, is unlikely to capture the interest of a prospective employer. A confused CV can reflect a confused mind! Be clear what you are selling and what value you can offer within the role for which you have applied. The reader does not know you and will make assumptions, both positive and negative, about you where there is scope to do so. Be specific or be vague and ‘cast the dice’ as, realistically, if your CV is ambiguous and generally difficult to follow it will not be read. Rather than recommend that one must begin in a certain fashion and end just so, we would rather suggest a formula or guide, as it is clear that many are unsure where to begin.
Ask yourself “what is it that they are looking for and where does that need to appear on my CV?”. Know what you are selling and, just as importantly, to whom. Be honest, know where your strengths lie and draft your CV to the decision maker in a style that they will be familiar with.
If you still need help, then please give us a call and we will be happy to advise further.
